Name: Sophie Hayes, Deer Girl
Age: 19 years old
Birthday & Astrology Sign: February 9th, Aquarius
Arcana: The Sun Arcana
World Snapshot: Rhodri is a military state that’s rather stable. It’s rather small, but still maintains a powerful presence in global politics, as it’s wedged between two large nations that are on less than stellar terms with one another. Rhodri acts as a buffer between them, successfully because the country has very little resources that would make it ‘worth it’ to be invaded – unless a copious amount of sheep and slate counts as a valuable resource (it doesn’t) – and its borders are protected by perilous mountain ranges with only one safe route through them.
The level of technology the world possesses is quasi-modern. Weaponry is modern, electricity exists in every home, but colour televisions aren’t yet a common household item, and most people listen to music on the radios. Phones are still mostly landlines, and mobiles are the giant, blocky unreliable things from the 90s. To estimate, the world is around 1960s level of technology.
The area where Sophie lives is in the rural woods near one of the mountain ranges. She lives somewhat isolated, with the nearest village being almost forty minute walk away. She rarely goes there, unless it’s to stock up on bullets, or parts for rifles, or other miscellaneous items that she cannot make herself, or hunt for.
Although there is no ‘magic’ in the world, beings like Sophie are not uncommon. At complete random, some babies born within Rhodri will have animal parts to them – like Sophie is a deer girl, another could be a fox boy, or bear boy, or bird girl… It only ever occurs in Rhodri and nowhere else in the world, and everyone has no idea why. There are rumblings of old legends where the descendants of the tribes in Rhodri from centuries before made pacts with the animal gods, but those are basically forgotten in the modern age.
Whatever the cause, it just acts as extra deterrent to the countries they’re wedged between. They don’t want to have animal freaks springing up amongst the ranks of their armies, and so leave Rhodri well enough alone, allowing it to flourish as a small military state with good trade.
Backstory: Sophie was raised by her father in a small, isolated house in the woods. Her mother died at childbirth, so the only influence she ever had in her life was from her father; a great, experienced hunter. Despite being born as a ‘deer girl’, her father didn’t allow it to stop him from hunting deer or stags. In fact, he would bring Sophie along to teach her how to hunt deer (as well as other animals) with him!
They were hermits together. Only Sophie’s father went to the village to drop off the animal skins and meat he hunted for money, and to collect items he couldn’t otherwise collect in the woods, every so often. Sophie remained at home, cleaning, preparing dinner, or performing maintenances on their rifles. Due to this she is very skilled in how to wield and maintain firearms, ranging from rifles to semi-automatic pistols – although her experience, of course, lies mostly in rifles. Her father also taught her how to use hunting bows, although that was mostly for a light hearted hobby than a necessity for living; “Also, you never know when your rifle might jam,” he would say.
Sophie would be perfectly happy living this life for as long as she lived, but when she was fourteen; her father contracted a terrible sickness during a harsh winter. She tended to him as well as she could, but she was no doctor, only having rudimentary first aid knowledge to treat broken bones and cuts and bruises, and so had to make her way to the village by herself for the first time. She had been frightened, of course, as her father was the only human she had ever spoken too, and she knew that people like her were in the vast minority. Still, she bundled up nice and warm, took one of the hunting dogs with her, and hiked her way through the woods to the village.
The people there were aware of her existence, as they knew her father well, but they were still shocked to see her in person. Thankfully they did not shun her, and in fact directed her to the village doctor – a young deer man. Apparently ‘Deer’ was the common animal for people to be born as in this area, but Sophie only had a brief moment of awe before remembering her sick father. She took the Deer Doctor with her back to her home, but sadly her attempts had been in vain. Her father passed away after only a week, leaving her alone in the house.
However, Sophie merely sucked it up, dug her father a grave behind the house – digging through thick snow and frozen dirt – buried him, and proceeded to continue her life as before. She went out hunting. She killed deer and foxes and rabbits. She skinned them. She made her own clothes. She sold her kills to the village. She tended to her rifles. She tended to the dogs. She cleaned the house. And, of course, she continuously spoke aloud as if her father was still with her. It wasn’t out of denial of course. She knew he was dead, but she was so used to chattering to him while he calmly tended to his own devices – well, it was a habit hard to break. So she spoke to herself as if her father was still near her, and continued living out her life in the woods for the next five years.
During this time she still only went sparingly to the village, out of necessity, but whenever she did go, she always made sure to pay a visit to the Deer Doctor. She didn’t blame him for failing to save her father, and it was nice to have someone like her to talk to…
Canon Standing: When she was out on a hunting trip when she’s nineteen.
Personality: Awkward is the best way to describe Sophie's personality, especially when interacting with other people. However, if she's within her own element with a subject she's comfortable with, she can chatter on for hours on end without break - and with plenty of enthusiasm. When her father was alive, she was the one who did most of the talking in the household, and it's why she's prone to talking to herself when doing tasks. It does make people think she's a bit odd if she does this in public, but she's unaware of how she comes across because of her lack of socialising. As such, whenever she's alone, or with someone she's comfortable with, Sophie is a very bubbly, enthusiastic individual, and likes to crack some very silly jokes or puns.
Living as a hermit though means that Sophie is fiercely independent. She has single-handedly cared for her father, and later herself, for her entire life, as well as carrying out the responsibilities of tending to a hunting lodge. She knows how to fix things, how to cook things, how to hunt and how to care for her animals, and because of this, she gets extremely flustered and offended if people offer their help to her. Although she is wise enough to seek help if it's regarding something that she's absolutely clueless on (like going to a doctor for sickness), she is not receptive to help being extended to her. She will ask for help if she needs it, thank you very much, and she will ask for it only when she's given her best damned try about a hundred times first, and not a second before!
This does make people think of her being a bit bullheaded at times, and it is true. She is so used to doing things her way that she is resistant to trying other ways unless it's absolutely necessary for her to do so - as in, life or death situations. It can make her a bit difficult to deal with if she's stuck on a problem. Of course, this type of stubbornness gets her into trouble a lot, but she's absolutely clueless about this flaw of hers.
However, despite her stubbornness, Sophie is extremely anxious around strangers. If she is trapped in a large crowd of people, she becomes very self-conscious about how different she looks, and immediately becomes paranoid that they would all be looking at and judging her. This causes her to slip into 'deer instincts', and bolt for a place to hide until she could slink away unseen. If she is forced to interact with strangers, and doesn't run away, Sophie ends up exploding into nervous, uncontrollable chattering. She'll normally pick a topic at random and talk about it, or she'll end up focusing on a feature of the stranger's and talking about that instead.
Needless to say she does accidentally step on a few toes because of this by unintentionally insulting people.
Sophie also has a habit of fidgeting a lot. Tugging on the beads of her antlers, or on her ear, on her shawl or rifle strap. She likes having her fingers do something, and it only gets worse the more nervous she gets. The only time she doesn't fidget is when she's by herself in her own little comfort zone.
Despite being such a nervous wreck when it comes to, well, people, Sophie does have some good points. If you secure her friendship and comfort, she is fiercely loyal, and would gladly hike through treacherous frozen mountains to come to your aid. Although awkward in conversation, she more than makes up for it in enthusiasm and friendliness, and is surprisingly physically affectionate for someone of her level of isolation - of course, affectionate being hair ruffles and tight hugs, very much like how one would bestow affection on, say, hunting dogs.
She's also intuitive and although not exactly book smart, she's quick on her feet if need be - literally and figuratively. Most of her intelligence is geared towards problem solving and handling her responsibilities, and if you try to engage her into philosophical talks, well, she'll just stare blankly at you and shrug helplessly. She gives no thoughts towards big, existential questions, and focuses mostly on getting by the day. Too busy doing this and that, no time to mull over the state of the universe!
tl;dr Sophie Hayes is a young hermit who's bullheaded and dorky, but is a friend for life if you secure her loyalty. She can also be a bit gullible as well - because she hasn't encountered 'lying' much in her short life. She does know how to lie, but she just doesn't expect people to do it often. So I guess we can add 'naive' onto that as well.
Canon Powers:
Sophie’s pretty much like a normal human, except for some minor things:
-She has better hearing than normal humans, due to having, well, deer hearing. It’s a bit more sensitive than a human’s, and it does make firing a rifle at close range a bit painful for her at times.
-Her kicks hurt. A lot. She can run faster than a human, as well as jump a bit further and higher. Not superhuman levels. She can’t jump like several stories. But she can jump those extra few feet – and if she dropkicks you, well, you’re going to be in a world of pain from it. Kicks from deer hurt.
Canon Weapons|Items:
-Remington model 770 – bolt action hunting rifle.
-Hunting Knives
-Hunting Bow + Arrows
Canon Allies:
None, alas.
Canon Baggage:
-Ammunition – since the magazines only hold 4 rounds each, she’ll have quite a lot to tide her over, a small box worth, with some loose rounds as well.
-Rifle maintenance kit
-Sewing kit
-Skinning kit (skinning knives, etc)
-Heavy coats and shawls
-Change of clothing
-Extra pair of thick boots
-Some How Do books mostly pertaining to First Aid or various carpentry/DIY subjects.
